Conscious Heads Barber Boot Camp
The "Conscious Heads Barber Boot Camp" is an employment project that is designed to address the high unemployment rate of young adults from the ages of 16 to 24 through barber apprenticeship training. In 2015, more than 40 percent of teens, ages 16 to 19, were unemployed, while 1 in 4 individuals between the ages of 20 to 24 was unemployed. This was well above the national rate of 5.5 percent. (Abell Foundation, 2015)
In contrast, there currently are 2,125 Maryland State Board barber apprenticeships in Baltimore City, open to individuals over the age of 16. The Conscious Heads Barber Boot Camp seeks to utilize the open apprenticeships as an opportunity to reduce the number of unemployed individuals between the ages of 16 to 24.
