Youth of the Diaspora
The mission of The African Diaspora Alliance is to build transnational solidarity, heal, and reunify African descendants through educational, artistic, traditional healing, and travel initiatives.
The Youth of the Diaspora (YOTD) program was launched in 2015 at Frederick Douglass High School and has since had three successful cohorts. YOTD is a year-long after-school program, inclusive of a fully-funded opportunity to travel internationally within the African Diaspora.
We have developed an African-Centered curriculum that teaches students a variety of topics inclusive of ancient African kingdoms, the prison industrial complex, and food apartheid. Of all the students in the United States who have the opportunity to study abroad, only 5% of those students are Black. My organization is working to combat this disparity and have now taken dozens of students to Havana, Cuba to study the African Diaspora.
